This photograph comes from an album compiled late in the summer of 1865 by Col. Arnold A. Rand, retired Union Officer of the 4th Cavalry Regiment of Massachusettes Volunteers and an early collector of Civil War images.

The album is arranged in a narrative structure using photographs, prints and other paper ephemera that tell the story of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, beginning with a view of Ford's Theater and ending with seven photos documenting the hanging of four of the conspirators. The photographs are the work of Alexander Gardner and include portraits of the individuals accused and later convicted of the crimes.

Images are in good condition, the ones of the hanging are especially noteworthy as the prints were made before the negatives suffered cracking and other deterioration (which is seen in many of the extant prints of this event). Images are mounted on gray/blue board. All of the pages are cut from the binding.
