Alfred Rowden was a keen amateur photographer and natural historian in Exeter. He often gave talks at local field clubs, illustrated with magic lantern slides that he created or purchased from commercial manufacturers. This photograph shows members of the Exeter Camera Club on a field trip to Stoke Woods, on the outskirts of Exeter. The Exeter Camera Club was established in 1890 when photography was becoming a popular leisure activity. By the time of this image photography was an acceptable hobby for women and young adults.
