The Exeter Blitz in May 1942 lasted one hour and 20 minutes. 40 acres of the city were either damaged or destroyed. The cathedral survived the bombardment; the only damage it suffered was from a high explosive bomb that destroyed the side chapel of St James in the south aisle of the choir.
