Born in London, Francis Towne lived mainly in Exeter from the mid 1760s but returned to the capital in 1807. Throughout his career, he travelled in Britain on sketching tours but his visits to Italy and Switzerland in 1780-81 provided fresh inspiration. Travellers from Okehampton would have encountered this view of the city as they approached it from the north west.
