  • Critic's Note: Inkie Whang is known for taking traditional Oriental landscape paintings, scanning them and recomposing them with starkly contrasting modern materials that still allow traces of the original works to remain in evidence. Because of his use of new technology, he sets the bar high when it comes to an art that at the same time professes a love of nature and a respect for tradition. This is especially true at the dawn of the new millennium, an important symbolic turning point that would seem to remove us even further from an appreciation of the most significant aspects of traditional Korean landscape, especially in the embodiment of humanistic tenets from Confucianism and Taoism in its textures and expressive methods. The artist's work methods highlight the strengths and limits of digital technology and suggest a growing distance between humanity and nature.
  • Artist's Education: Pratt Institute. NY, USA. M.F.A.
