Exile in Suma, from The Tale of Genji

Tosa MitsuyoshiEarly 17th century (Momoyama period)

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

Scene from Suma, Chapter 12 in The Tale of Genji: Hikaru Genji, the protagonist of The Tale of Genji, is gazing out at the cherry blossoms while thinking of the capital, at the temporary house in Suma, when his friend To-no Chujo comes from the capital to visit him. Clouds and haze are represented not only by applied gold leaves but also sprinkled gold dust and cut-gold foils in different shades scattered on the gold dust.
On the reverse side is the double-circled black seal of Tosa Kyuyoku, which indicates that it was painted by Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1539-1613), who used the name Kyuyoku. Probably it was created in his later life during the late Keicho years.
