To overcome the inertia of the mechanism, and to be able to achieve better image resolutions, Manfred von Ardenne set his sights on fully electronic television. This experimental tube for magnetic vertical deflection and electrostatic horizontal deflection is a precursor to the television picture tube, and it shows the image on a small angled screen and not, as would later become commonplace, on the tube’s coated interior.
