When Pyle's illustrations for “The Fate of a Treasure Town” appeared in 1905, they were - according to one early Pyle biographer - "the sensation of the magazine world... marvelously rich in color...dramatically stirring, and vividly romantic." The story's subject is the fall of the wealthy Colombian city of Cartagena to pirates and the seizure of its citizens' property.
