Beijing, China

At seventy-six years old (in sui), Fu Shan transcribed the poem "Sitting Alone in a Mountain Studio," for Chamberlain Xue by Yang Su (d. 606), the grand preceptor of the Sui Dynasty (581-618). It shows the poet's peaceful, easygoing feeling. The large-size vertical scroll fits Fu Shan's unrestrained cursive script, showing his consummate mastery over ink brushwork in his later years. Fu Shan's distinctive cursive script shows his pursuit of the artistic goals of sincerity and clumsiness.
