The adoration of the Virgin Mary has a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages in Marpingen. The wood engraving of the Catholic parish church in Marpingen dates back to 1870 and therefore illustrates the constant interest of believers in this special place for worshipping the Virgin Mary, even before the apparition of Mary in Härtelwald in 1876. The French lettering on this wood engraving indicates that pilgrims had already come from France to Marpingen during this period.
