The F86 made by North American Aviation of the US was the US Air Force’s first sweptwing jet fighter. It was first deployed in October 1947. The variants of the F86 can be divided into fighterbombers and interceptors, the A, E, F, and H models being the former and the D, K, and L models made as allweather interceptors. The main fighter jet of the Korean Air Force during the Korean War was the F51D, but following the armistice, the Korean Air Force adopted five F86F fighterbombers on June 20, 1955, to counter the threat of North Korea’s MiG15 jets. These were the first jet fighters of the Korean Air Force, and a total of 201 aircraft were adopted and operated until 1968.
The F86F became an icon of the Korean Air Force through the Korean movie classic The Red Scarves and the Blue Sabre flight demonstration team (1959–1966). It was retired on June 30, 1993.
