According to Greek mythology, Cupid caused Aurora, the goddess of dawn, to fall in love obsessively with the mortal hunter Cephalus. Amidst a flurry of flowers, Aurora lands on a boulder and gazes longingly at his slumbering body. One naked child sprinkles the earth with dew from a glass jug while another blows away the darkness of the night. Soon, Aurora will carry Cephalus away. For now, he rests with his hand suggestively gripping his ivory sash. A mischevious Cupid grins at the viewer behind Cephalus, and points to Aurora as he oversees the havoc he has wreaked.
