En este teatro el Consejo de Guerra condenó a muerte a Maximiliano. Originalmente fue llamado "Gran Teatro de Iturbide" posteriormente cambió a "Teatro Iturbide". Finalmente el 5 de febrero de 1922, se sustituyó el nombre de “Teatro Iturbide” por “Teatro de la República”.
