It was a small group of onubenses intellectuals who believe in first museum under the title of Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, incorporated in the State in 1922, which had about founding proceeds almost entirely from private except for a small batch of masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries deposited by the then Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. With the Civil War, much of these works were returned to their owners, those from the state stored at the Institute of Secondary Education La Rabida, until the constitution of the current museum. The 40s was a new attempt to provide a museum Huelva, this time of archeology, prolific inevitable consequence of the activity of engineer Carlos D. Marquez Cerdan, appointed curator of archaeological activities such effect in the province. Was housed in a small building donated by the Port of Huelva, where malvivió until the current building was inaugurated in 1973, giving the institution of an optional Senior Corps of Archivists, Librarians and Archaeologists, D. Mariano del Amo, who he was the first director of the new Provincial Museum of Huelva.
