During the first phase of building, Gropius and Meyer concentrated on the main building and its characteristic facade made of steel and glass. The facade gives the window fronts the effect of curtain tracks, hanging loosely in front of the brick facade. Despite its solid construction, the building appears extremely light. Benscheidt decided on a company name that seemed abstract at first sight, along with a minimalist logo. "Fagus sylvatica" is the botanical name for the beech tree, which originally provided the wood used for the shoe lasts. Benscheidt believed in the commercial effectiveness of a simple, memorable logo.
