FALLINGWATER
BEAR RUN, PENNSYLVANIA, BUILT 1935–1939
ARCHITECT: FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
Fallingwater was built as a weekend house for the Pittsburgh department-store owner Edgar Kaufmann. A massive stone-clad chimney anchors the structure, which otherwise appears as a series of wings and terraces, some cantilevered as much as 16 feet over the river below. The waterfall, from which the house takes its name, appears to flow from the building itself. Wright’s design also accommodated the family’s request for a plunge pool and guest house.
