A.E. Ferris: James Waltham Curtis was born in Devonshire, England, in 1839. A painter, illustrator and photographic colourist, he migrated to Melbourne during the goldrush. His employers included Johnstone, O'Shannessy and Co, where he worked as a colourist, and then as an illustrator for the 'Illustrated Australian News'. His oil paintings are largely landscapes.
