Jacek Malczewski painted several dozen self-portraits, but this one was created in an exceptional period for him. In 1911, the artist, together with Wacław Szymanowski, presented his works at the Art Nouveau exhibition in Vienna.
The portrait shows, apart from the proud figures of the artist in a thick, historic outfit, a fragment of the Krakow Zwierzyniec, the painter's beloved place, where he lived and worked.
