Waring studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, graduating in 1914. She was a prominent portraitist whose works were exhibited in museums around the world, including the Smithsonian. Waring was commissioned to paint the Harmon Foundation’s series Portraits of Outstanding American Citizens of Negro Origin, which includes the now-famous portraits of W.E.B. Dubois and Marian Anderson.
