Famous Places and Ports in Settsu Province / Left screen

17th century (Edo period)

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

From right to left; on the right screen are the city and the seashore of Sakai, Sumiyoshi Shrine, Shitenno-ji Temple, then Osaka; on the left screen are Nishinomiya, Hyogo-no-tsu (present day the Port of Kobe), then Akashi. This is t probably he oldest picture of Hyogo-no-tsu. Though it is thought to have been painted during the middle of the 17th century, the times of the landscape might date back to the early time of the century.
The moat and gate on the north identify the city of Sakai; and as the whole screen is about the province of Settsu, only the Settsu-side half of the city is depicted here (the city was divided into Settsu and Izumi). On the seashore of Sakai, half processed lumbers are seen.
