The series ‘Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Metropolis’ depicts fifty famous restaurants of the late Edo period. In this color print, the kabuki actor depicted in one of his roles was drawn by Utagawa Kunisada, while the entrance, famous food and depiction of the restaurant
were drawn by Utagawa Hiroshige. This particular print depicts a restaurant called Momokawarō. As a famous ryōtei (high-class restaurant), it offered Chinese food in shippoku (Chinese style) dining that had come to Japan in the Edo period (1603-1868).
