"Indispensable accessories of the feminine clothing, fans reflected taste and fashion changes. In Spain they were popularized especially at the end of the XVIII century, and consolidated its success as the XIX century drew on. Spanish production of this type of pieces was particularly concentrated in Valencia.
During Elizabeth II Reign the trend of past styles progressive recuperation was obvious with the possibility of combining them in an absolute freely way and only considering it decorative and evocative powers. An example of this way to combine styles is this fan of the Romantic Museum of Sitges, decorated in one of its faces with a courtesan scene typical of French Renaissance, vaguely set in the times of the Valois King in the XVI century.
On the other fan face a rococo taste gallant scene is developed, with a kind festive life recreation that was attributed to the Louis XV reigning period, about the central third of the XVIII century. The recovery of these gallant issues spread from France during Napoleon III and Eugenia de Montijo Empire."
