Mi’kmaq, Malecite and Huron Wendat peoples produced delicate moosehair embroidery on birchbark and cloth throughout much of the 19th century. Mi’kmaq and Malecite people who camped near Quebec City in the summer likely learned the art from the local Huron Wendat. The embroidered images often depict people in fine dress, a sign of well being. Strawberries, which are ritually important in this world and the afterworld, are also frequent motifs.
