In the 19th century, the fan was still considered an essential accessory for a lady. At the same time, a new trend appeared—fans were ordered for specific dressing tables. Often fans depicted birds and other animals, and in the Empire period, ancient motifs came into fashion.
“At the ball, you can only wear a lace scarf or even gauze, but for God’s sake, do not forget your bouquet and Chinese fan, or else people will think you are from Kamchatka.” (the journal Northern Bee, 1833).
