Fan

In the middle of the fan’s white silk sheet, the Holy Crown of Hungary rests on a red cushion on a green pedestal, while a canopy framed with fringes floats above it. Guarding the crown with drawn swords, there are four. On the right of the scene, we can see the Hungarian coat of arms with the crown on an oval shield. On the other side, on another oval shield topped with a five-pointed crown, an arm in green is holding a sabre. The silk sheet of the fan is held by eighteen bone slats, painted with flowers and golden ribbons, and richly adorned with carving. The carving of the outer slats shows an Eastern man playing a flute.
From the 18th century onward, fans were often decorated with illustrations of ongoing events. For the Hungarians, bringing the Holy Crown back from Vienna was a very important one, and thus painted on fans too in 1790.
