Fatima Al Ali (Age 13) “This year, Ramadan was different compared to the previous years. The global pandemic Covid- 19 that attacked the country made everyone stay at home, leaving the streets empty. Silence descended the streets; the night became even darker. Leaving the house became scary and stressful.
On the other hand, houses became more alive because of the decorations for Ramadan. We felt warmer by reciting the Holy Quran, and of course because of the smell of the delicious food which was made by the hands of all family members. Last Ramadan strengthened the relationship between my family members and our bond with God. Taraweeh prayer was held in our house with dad. It created a wonderful feeling. We had afternoon reciting sessions every day with our mother to contemplate the Quran which helped us to understand the Quran’s stories and heaven description and complete reading the Quran throughout the holy month of Ramadan. We raised our hands praying “May Allah keep his blessings and protect us from the virus”. We stayed up until late at night to do the final touches of Eid decorations in our house.
We prepared Eid cakes and chocolates for our younger siblings, and prepared our Eid clothes and perfumed them. We woke up for the Fajr prayer and prepared breakfast and then prayed the Eid prayer with dad. Then we gathered in the living room with our grandmother, grandfather, and aunties to exchange Eid greetings, observing social distancing.
The streets were empty and dark, but we were very happy inside our houses. We thanked Allah for all graces during this period of the epidemic.”
