Feather headdress

1800-1825

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

Head ornament, circlet made of a thick crescent covered with dark red-brown barkcloth, with an up-standing bunch of tropic-bird feathers on each end, bound on with barkcloth and coconut-fibre cord.
Form would seem to suggest it is Marquesan. Small sections of the barkcloth's underside are visible, showing the cloth is lighter in colour, and has been dyed on the upper side only. The cloth has a textured pattern of parallel lines, produced by the grooves of the beater.
