In his time, Fela Kuti was arrested on over 200 occasions as he was always a voice of opposition against the Nigerian government. 'The Fela's Republic & The Kalakuta Queens' musical chronicles Fela's birth, activism and his non-traditional family. It explores the life of the legend Fela Kuti, and the women that were an integral part of his band. A unique insight into the inner walls of Fela's Kalakuta Republic reveals the women and their unique fashion, dance and African identities. They were a source of strength and inspirational support to Fela. They endured intimidation and torture from the police and the general public due to their involvement with Fela. 'Fela's Republic & the Kalakuta Queens' is a never been told historical piece depicting the defiance of a legend and the lives of his women. This musical was produced and directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and is one of the biggest musicals to come out of Africa.
