Felting is one of man's oldest textile technologies, first made by matting animal hair and or plant fibres. Today most felt is made industrially but some artisans/designers still hand make felt. Felt can be considered a South African textile due to the quality of merino wool produced in the country. It is also because of the role blankets - particularly felt ones - have and continue to play in South African clothing, fashion and thus identity
