Friday Harbor, United States

Throughout the ceremony, young Maasai girls adoringly accompany their warrior boyfriends. The beaded collars and headbands that the girls wear are designed to rhythmically enhance their bodily movements as they dance. The girlfriends of the warriors must be prepubescent, as pregnancy out of wedlock is considered taboo among the Maasai.
