This sculpture was carved during the same period that Angkor Wat, a great temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, was constructed. The temple and its central image were intended to bring about the union of the soul of the king with Vishnu. This goddess may be Vishnu's wife Lakshmi; originally, sacred objects held in her hands would have identified her.
