Female figure of painted wood from Maprik, Papua New Guinea, ca. 1900. Female figures are not nearly as common as male figures in Melanesian sculpture. In some areas female figures were used in initiation rituals for young boys, who had to crawl between the spread legs of the figure, possibly as very literal symbolisation of rebirth.
