- Female figure: Figurines of this type from prehistoric Greece are known as 'idols', from the Greek word eidolon, meaning image. They occur in large numbers on the islands of the Aegean Sea. The figurines create a very stylised impression, but this is partly an illusion: details such as mouth and eyes were once added in paint. Most of these figurines depict recumbent women. Their function is hard to fathom. It has been suggested that they were fertility symbols, or effigies of the deceased. It is certainly true that the figurines have been discovered in graves.
