Female Figurine

Early Bronze Age II Mid 3rd millenium BC

Sadberk Hanım Museum

Sadberk Hanım Museum
İstanbul, Türkiye

The form displays steatopygic
characteristics. The fleshy arms are bent
at the elbows, forming a short blunt
protrusion, with the hands tucked into the
underarms. The hands are not detailed.
The seated figure has a swollen drooping
abdomen and exaggerated hips. The legs
are thick, in proportion with the hips, and
joined at the front. The lower legs are
short and the feet indistinct. The original
head is missing and has been replaced by
a head from a figurine of the same period.
The head is elongated and tapering. The
eyes are almond shaped and indicated
by incised lines. The nose is narrow and
straight. The hair, which is indicated
by lines, is parted in the centre and
gathered into two buns on the crown and
nape. The bun on the crown has a small
protuberance while that at the nape of the
neck is divided in half and formed into a
roll with hatching above and below.
Numerous similar figurines of women
have been found at the Hacılar VI
settlement and are thought to be cult
objects (see Mellaart 1970, pp. 166-175).
