There were also rare instances of women working in the mining industry. They earned less and due to their height they were very well suited for work in narrow tunnels. It was however stipulated in the international work organisation in 1935 that women and children may no longer work underground. The black and white photography shows female workers pushing wagons in the wagon circulation system at the Velsen pit. This is work which men performed in peacetime.
