Fern and horsetail fossils

Museum of Natural History of Venice

Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

During the Carboniferous, on lands with consistently warm and humid tropical climate, developed extensive forests of ferns, club mosses and horsetails, which then would give rise to today’s immense coal deposits. Towards the end of this period, early conifers made their appearance as well. The huge plant development made possible the proliferation of the early terrestrial faunas, made up especially of arthropods such as spiders, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions and insects.
