Portrait of José Fernando de Abascal y Souza (Oviedo, 1743-Madrid, 1821). He was a Spanish military and politician, thirty-eighth viceroy of Peru (1806-1816). He undertook important reforms in accordance with the enlightened thinking of the time. Among his works are the General Cemetery of Lima and the San Fernando School of Medicine, which later became part of the University of San Marcos.
