Fibula with hunting scene

Siglo II a. C.

Museo Arqueológico Nacional

Museo Arqueológico Nacional
Madrid, Spain

La Tène II-type fibula, mould-cast silver with traces of gilding. This piece features an original hunting scene which is not merely decorative but actually constitutes the structure of the brooch, forming its bow, foot and catch-plate. The pin is missing.
The scene depicts a rider, probably the hunter, apparently unarmed except for a round shield or caetra, chasing a wild boar that is looking back at the dog, which turns its head towards the rider. The front of the fibula is embellished with the image of a goddess between two horse protomes representing the Potnia Theron, who was invoked to bless the hunt, an activity that denoted the status and power of those who engaged in it.
These types of fibulae, in addition to being personal ornaments, were considered symbols of social status and may have been presented to young aristocrats after passing the tests of initiation into adulthood.
