This work was created in conjunction with Goya’s famous series of prints themed around the horrors of war (Los Desastres de la Guerra). Indeed, it might be seen as a kind of visual summary of the various acts of barbarism depicted in the series. War is here portrayed as a fierce dog, the immense size of which means human lives have no chance of surviving or finding meaning. The dramatic imagery leaves no doubt as to its message: war results in humankind and humanity going, as it were, to the dogs.
