In this exquisite sculpture the bareheaded Dalai Lama is shown sitting on cushions decorated with single and crossed vajras, symbols connected with long-life rituals or invocatory prayers. This is an indication that this portrait of the Great Fifth was made when he was still alive, or at least before his demise was officially announced.
