Romanism
is often associated with a break with the beauty of ancient art, with barbaric,
extremely simple and primitive art. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the Palace of Bishop Erazm Ciołek there are works
showing that Romanism used elements of ancient art, carrying out artistic tasks
appropriate for the Christian era. There are for example elements of the portal
of the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Czchów with a carved
griffin from around the middle of the 12th century, which show that Romanesque
sculpture as a decoration was inseparably connected with architecture.
