The Danbo character first appeared in the Japanese manga "Yotsuba%!" in 2006. Five-year-old Yotsuba Koiwai's mistakens her friend Miura Hayasaka dressed in a suit of cardboard boxes for a real robot. When Yotsuba asks the robot its name, Miura does not have the heart to disappoint her friend, so she says, in costume, "Danbo" which is a play on "danboru," the Japanese word word for cardboard. The figure has been a popular meme among Internet users.
