The distinctive form of this sculpture might owe something to Kenneth Armitage’s war-time experience in the Royal Artillery, where he worked in aircraft and tank identification. Critics have commented that the rounded body echoes the shape of a tank and the thin horizontal limbs suggest the lines of guns. The small head and rounded breasts might also relate to Armitage’s interest in ancient and Near Eastern clay sculpture.
