Figure of Maitreya

Unknown8th century

Art Gallery of New South Wales

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

Carried in robes of travellers and pilgrims, it is small figures such as this that have survived the vagaries of turbulent histories. This unassuming figure of the Future Buddha Maitreya (identified by the stupa in his headdress) carries a lotus bud in his right hand and the end of his robe in his left.

The Asian Collections, AGNSW, 2003, pg.324.
