It is also called Silk Painting of Late Zhou Dynasty or Silk Painting of Beast, Phoenix and Beauty. Lines drawn in traditional ink and brush style (a kind of Chinese outline drawing) and freehand brushwork (a type of Chinese painting that relies on free strokes and shuns details) give to the vividness of the lady, dragon and phoenix. The dragon and phoenix are in dynamic movements while the lady is in a static posture,
resenting the strong effect of sharp contrast. The lady is elaborately portrayed, with delicate lines showing his eyebrow and moustache clearly and demonstrating the sense of ethereal beauty. The whole design is simple but full of mystery. Therefore, it is paired with Silk Painting of a Man Riding a Dragon (Warring States Period) as two priceless gems of Pre-Qin Dynasty paintings. It is one of the earliest silk paintings discovered in China and is acclaimed as one of the national treasures.
