Figured terracotta

2nd-1st century BC

MArTA - Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto
Taranto, Italy

Theatrical mask typical of Italic farce – a popular and bawdy genre – with the features of a bald man with a deformed face. Probably modelled on a real mask used for stage performances, originally made of cloth or other perishable material. The item comes from a cremation tomb and attests to the strong link between the world of the dead, entertainment and Dionysian cults.
