Figurine of lady with mirror

Unknown-0300/-0250

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

This figurine depicts an elegant lady engaged in the ritual of making herself up. Her clothes are still loose. She is gazing intently into a mirror to gauge the effects of her makeup and hair style. The mirror consists of two parts, which can be folded open. The lady’s hair is bound in strands in the ‘melon hairstyle’ that was fashionable at the time. The figurine was painted in bright colours. Remains of the paint are still clearly visible. These lovely little terracotta figurines are also known as tanagras, after the little town of Tanagra in northern Greece where many of them have been found.
