Nearly 900 copies are stored in the DHM's film archive: fictional and documentary films, commercials and educational films. Among these are silent films from the early twentieth century as well as productions from recent decades. A focal point of the collection, which has been built up since 1992, are films that depict German and European history. The plot of the historical film "Der Favorit der Königin" (The Queen's Favorite) from 1922 was set in the Elizabethan era of the 16th century. The DHM acquired a copy the film, which was long believed to be lost, in the form of a Dutch rental version of 1928. In partnership with the Federal Archives Film Archive, the film was restored in 2002 and provided with German subtitles.
