Buxton Opera House was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1903. It was initially a live theatre venue before becoming a cinema in 1927. It continued showing films and theatre productions until the 1970s but was in a poor state of repair. The Opera House was restored and reopened in 1979, with a new orchestra pit added to the original Frank Matcham design. Further restoration over the years has maintained and enhanced its Edwardian splendour.
