Fin Whale

Leiden, Netherlands

The Fin Whale is one of the fastest whales. It's also one of the biggest whales: he can grow up to 27 metres! Most whales have a dark top and white belly for camouflage. But the Fin Whale doesn't! The Fin Whale swims sideways. That is why the dark camouflage is on its back.

When Fin Whales talk, they speak with loud and low tones. They growl, moan, make click noises and hit the water. These sounds can reach for 850 kilometres! Sometimes whales wash ashore.

This skeleton was found in 2013 in 's-Gravenzande, south of The Hague.
